About this activity

Trincomalee sits on one of Asia's best whale watching routes. Blue whales pass through on migration. Spinner dolphins are common throughout the season. Our boat crew know where to look and when to be there.

Questions about Whale & Dolphin Watching

When is the best time for whale watching in Trincomalee?

Late April to early May is peak season for blue whales, which pass through on migration. Spinner dolphins are around for most of the diving season (May–October). We don't run whale watching trips outside the season. The ocean conditions are too rough and the whales aren't here.

Is a blue whale sighting guaranteed?

We can't guarantee it. Whales are wild animals and the ocean is large. What we can say is that our guides know these waters well and whale sightings are genuinely common during peak season. We see them on most trips in late April and early May. Dolphins are almost a given on every trip.

Is the boat trip rough?

We only run whale watching on calm days. The bay is generally protected and early mornings are the calmest. If you're prone to seasickness, take medication the night before and eat a light breakfast. The boat has shaded seating and it's not a long trip to the whale grounds.
