Best Time to Dive in Trincomalee: Month-by-Month Guide

Planning a diving trip to Trincomalee? Here is an honest, month-by-month breakdown of conditions, visibility, marine life, and what to expect from peak season through the monsoon.

Diving Club Team·

The best time to dive in Trincomalee is May through October. The northeast monsoon retreats, winds drop, and the Bay of Bengal settles into calm, clear water. Visibility runs 15-30 metres on the best days. Water temperature holds at 28-30 degrees C throughout. HMS Hermes is at her clearest, whale sharks appear off the reef, and Pigeon Island's coral is at its best.

There is more nuance than a six-month window suggests. Here is what each month actually looks like.

January and February. These are the heart of the northeast monsoon. The bay is rough, and most offshore dive sites are inaccessible by small boat. Visibility drops to 5-10 metres at sites still reachable. Some sheltered spots like Coral Garden and Crow Island stay diveable in calm spells. If you are in Trincomalee in January or February for other reasons, do not write off the water entirely, but manage your expectations.

March and April. The transition months. Winds start easing from mid-March. By April, conditions improve fast. Visibility begins recovering to 8-15 metres at most sites. Blue whale sightings peak in March and April, making these months outstanding for our whale watching trips even as diving conditions are still building. Water temperature is 27-29 degrees C.

May. The season opens properly. Visibility typically reaches 15-20 metres. HMS Hermes is diveable, Pigeon Island is excellent, and all 15 of our dive sites are accessible. It is also shoulder season, with fewer tourists and more flexible scheduling. This is an underrated month to visit Trincomalee.

June, July, and August. Peak season. These are the best diving months of the year. Visibility regularly hits 20-30 metres. The sea is flat. Whale sharks have been spotted at our offshore sites in June and July. HMS Hermes in August is about as good as wreck diving gets in the Indian Ocean. Visibility reaches 30 metres, the batfish clouds are at their largest, and morning water temperatures sit at 29 degrees C.

September and October. Still strong. Conditions begin softening in October as the monsoon approaches, but September is often excellent. Quieter than peak season, conditions nearly as good. October is another shoulder month: good dives, fewer boats on the water.

November and December. The northeast monsoon arrives and conditions deteriorate fast. Offshore sites become inaccessible. Our season typically closes in late October or early November depending on conditions. We open again in May.

Marine life by season. Blue whales: March to June, peak in March and April, offshore. Whale sharks: June to August, occasional. Spinner dolphins: year-round. Sea turtles (hawksbill and green): year-round at Pigeon Island and Coral Garden. HMS Hermes batfish schools: densest from June to September.

Our recommendation. For the best conditions, aim for June to August. For good conditions with fewer people and more availability, May or September are strong choices. If your window is April, you will get improving diving conditions and the best whale watching in Sri Lanka.
