Sri Lanka rarely tops the list when divers plan Indian Ocean trips. The Maldives gets the headlines, Thailand gets the backpackers, and Sri Lanka sits in the middle offering better wreck diving than almost anywhere in the region and marine diversity that surprises divers every season.
The island has three main diving regions: Trincomalee on the northeast coast (May to October), Hikkaduwa and the south coast (October to April), and the sites around Passikudah on the east coast. The seasons are complementary, so one side of the island is always open.
Trincomalee. The northeast coast is where serious divers go. The standout site is HMS Hermes (27-52 m), the world's largest diveable aircraft carrier wreck, sunk April 9, 1942. Nothing else in Sri Lanka compares for scale and historical significance. Beyond the Hermes, Trincomalee has Pigeon Island National Park (reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, intact coral), Swami Rock (Hindu cannon at 12 m, soft corals, turtles), and dozens of smaller sites from beginner-friendly shallows to advanced pinnacles. Blue whale watching is excellent in March and April. Diving season: May to October.
Hikkaduwa. The south coast's most established dive destination. Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary protects a stretch of reef with good coral cover and a resident turtle population. Best sites: Hikkaduwa reef (6-12 m, good for beginners), the SS Conch wreck (30 m, cargo ship), and Kirala Gala (15 m, rock formation). Visibility averages 10-15 metres, less than Trincomalee in peak season but reliable. Season: November to April. Easy access from Colombo by train.
Unawatuna. Near Galle on the south coast. Known for shallow recreational diving (6-18 m) and a cluster of small wrecks in the bay. The Persian Merchant wreck at 15 m is the most interesting. Good for beginners and those doing a first certification. Season: November to April.
Mirissa. A smaller dive scene. Deep water and whale shark sightings make it worth considering. The offshore sites drop steeply, creating conditions for large pelagics. Whale shark encounters have been recorded here between March and May. Limited dive operators. Season: November to April.
Passikudah. On the east coast, north of Trincomalee. The bay is sheltered with good visibility. The dive sites are less developed than Trincomalee, which means fewer divers and undisturbed reef. Access is improving. Season: May to October.
Choosing between regions. If you are visiting Sri Lanka to dive and have one region to choose, pick Trincomalee between June and August. HMS Hermes alone justifies the trip. If you are on a broader Sri Lanka itinerary and diving is one of several activities, match the coast to your travel route: south coast diving in October to April, east and northeast coast in May to October.
What to dive when. For wrecks: Trincomalee (HMS Hermes, SS British Sergeant, HMS Erebus). For reef: Trincomalee in peak season or Hikkaduwa year-round. For whale watching: Trincomalee March to June, Mirissa December to April. For beginners: Trincomalee (Coral Garden, Crow Island) or Hikkaduwa reef. For advanced and technical diving: HMS Hermes technical section (40-52 m), Klathipa Deep.
